Hello, I’m Horacio. I went through the exact process you might be facing right now. Born in Uruguay and having lived for years in the United States, I know what it means to build a successful life abroad while feeling that the frantic, non-stop pace no longer aligns with what truly matters.
During a journey through Spain to reconnect with ancestral roots in Galicia and Northern Portugal, everything shifted. From the vibrant energy of Vigo and historic Santiago de Compostela down to the rugged beauty of the Atlantic coast, we fell in love with the land.
Reaching the Lower Miño (Baixo Miño)—where the Atlantic meets the Minho river, just minutes from Portugal and close to Porto’s international airport—we knew we had found our sanctuary. That «someday» became a reality. We navigated the NIE process, acquired our property, and made the full leap.
Today, we live here alongside part of our family—while keeping our beloved children close in heart across Uruguay and cherishing our lifelong friendships in the US. We are deeply grateful to America for the opportunities it provided us, one of them being the ability to invest our savings here and enjoy a much more affordable, balanced cost of life. Furthermore, we have found a human scale and tranquility that matches our lifestyle, including access to an exceptional public healthcare system that we complement with our private medical coverage.
With a background in sociology and behavioral analysis, my life’s work has always been about understanding human well-being. Here in Galicia, beyond having surpassed the milestone of 50, I finally found the human rhythm I refused to postpone any longer.

Hello, I’m Paolo. Unlike Horacio, I was born in Europe. Having also passed the half-century mark, I originally hail from Rome, Italy. I married my wife, a native of Vigo with deep Galician roots, and after living for years in Italy, the birth of our young son made us look for an environment where he could grow up with the safety, community, and human scale that major European metropolitan areas are rapidly losing.
We chose the Lower Miño (Baixo Miño) region because it offers a rare combination that appeals deeply to European expats and remote professionals: an exceptional quality of life at a fraction of the cost found in Northern Europe or major Italian and French cities. While I can easily visit my family in Rome via a short drive to Porto’s international airport—complemented by Spain’s stellar high-speed rail and highway networks—our son is growing up with the freedom to play safely outdoors.
Here, pristine ocean beaches, river pools, mountains, and pure nature coexist with full modern infrastructure, robust digital connectivity, and universal public healthcare. We chose to step off the relentless corporate treadmill of large European capitals and embrace a life with true meaning, where safety, culture, and nature define our everyday reality.
